Shoulder Arthroscopy: Our Top Tips for an Optimal Recovery
When you have arthroscopic surgery on your shoulder, you’re taking advantage of advances in technology that enable Steven E. Nolan, MD, to perform the needed repair through a tiny incision in your shoulder.
Whether you need treatment on your rotator cuff, labrum, cartilage, or other structure, he inserts a small camera and the instruments required for repair, performs the procedure, and then sends you home the same day. Because the incision is smaller and less traumatic than open surgery, your recovery will be quicker and faster — but you will still have a recovery.
Here are a few of the top tips that help our patients ensure an optimal recovery after shoulder arthroscopy.
Prepare ahead of time
For the first few weeks after surgery, you likely will not be able to lift your arm up or out, which will require some changes in your daily routine. To prepare ahead of time, think about clothing and household items.
You’ll want shirts you can put on without raising your arm, so button-down shirts and zip-up sweatshirts or pullovers will be best. T-shirts may work if they fit loosely.
A few household items can make a big difference as well. Taking a shower will be more difficult, so consider a detachable shower head, a long-handled scrubber for your back, and even a shower chair.
You may also have to sleep propped up to protect your shoulder, so a pillow wedge or extra pillows will help — or you could consider sleeping in a recliner.
Food and snacks that are easy to open and prepare will be helpful as well.
Focus on physical therapy
This may be the most important tip we give you: Follow your physical therapy routine religiously.
Physical therapy is the best and fastest way to restore function, strength, and range of motion to your shoulder. Make it a priority not to miss any physical therapy sessions, and be sure to do your homework by completing your at-home exercises each day.
Putting in the work here will pay off, so don’t skimp on your physical therapy.
Eat healthy and stay hydrated
After surgery, your immune system will be weakened, and you’ll need to rebuild your strength, so eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to get the nutrients you need. Include fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.
Staying hydrated is key to your recovery as well — if you’re dehydrated, your body won’t be able to carry out its necessary functions and help you heal. Men should drink about 15.5 cups per day, and women should drink 11.5 cups.
Be patient
Finally, be patient. Recovery from even arthroscopic surgery is a process that takes time. You may become frustrated, but stay in tune with what your body is telling you and pace yourself appropriately.
Listen to Dr. Nolan and your physical therapist about which activities are safe for you to pursue. Occasional setbacks are expected, and we’ll help you get through it. Practice patience and perseverance, and you’ll be back to normal sooner than you think.
